NetTag+ Project: For a Sustainable Fishing

Sustainable fishing is essential for preserving marine ecosystems. The NetTag+ project emerges as an innovative solution to reduce the environmental impact of fishing activity. Learn how this technology is transforming the sector.

Protecting marine ecosystems is crucial to ensuring the long-term viability of the fishing industry. The NetTag+ project represents an innovative breakthrough that combines technology and environmental responsibility. This initiative focuses on recovering lost fishing gear and promotes more efficient, sustainable, and responsible fishing.

What is the NetTag+ Project?

The accumulation of marine litter severely compromises ecosystems, with fishing being one of the main contributors. Many pieces of fishing gear are lost in the ocean, becoming “ghost nets” that threaten marine biodiversity.

NetTag+ is an innovative project that integrates technology with environmental responsibility. Using a smart tag net system, this project aims to reduce the loss of fishing nets and equipment, allowing for their quick recovery and preventing irreversible damage to the environment. The project also promotes educational actions, such as the Fishing for Litter and Clean Ocean Day programs, which encourage ocean cleaning, support marine pollution control, and adopt sustainable practices.

The Impact of “Ghost Nets”

Ghost nets represent a silent and persistent threat in the oceans. Made from highly resistant synthetic materials, these nets can remain submerged for decades without decomposing. During this time, they accidentally capture fish, turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals such as dolphins and seals, causing significant harm to biodiversity.

Ghost nets not only harm the environment but also disrupt the fishing industry by reducing fish stocks, posing navigation hazards, and increasing operational costs. Therefore, finding effective solutions to this problem is essential to ensuring a balance between exploitation and conservation.

The Importance of Innovation in Fishing Activity

Innovations in fishing technology are key to making the fishing industry more sustainable. NetTag+ incorporates developments such as electronic net tracking, biodegradable materials, and selective equipment that minimize environmental impacts and prevent waste.

Cadilhe & Santos supports this evolution by investing in modern and efficient solutions.
Collaboration between fishers, scientists, and environmental organizations strengthens the adoption of more responsible practices, reducing marine pollution and ensuring ocean preservation for future generations.

How does the NetTag+ work?

NetTag+ combines three essential components to track and recover fishing materials efficiently.

1. NetTag+ Tracking Device

Attached to fishing gear, this device uses replaceable alkaline batteries to enable precise location in the ocean, making maintenance easier.

2. Surface Locator Unit (SLU)

Installed on the vessel, this device receives signals from the submerged transponder, allowing for the precise identification of the fishing net’s location.

3. Digital Interface

This last one connects with users via a tablet, smartphone, or GPS-enabled computer. The surface device connects via Bluetooth or USB cable, transmitting real-time net location data.
