Technology on the high seas

FishFiberLight is a phosphorescent monofilament developed as an alternative to conventional surface longline fishing solutions, in which the main catches are swordfish, tuna, red shark and porbeagle. The Atlantic and Pacific oceans are the main fishing grounds.
This highly durable fishing line is capable of emitting light in any environment, even in deep sea, without the need for any energy source. Designed using nanotechnology and advanced materials, FiberFishLight has phosphorescent nanomaterials (pigments) in its composition. When activated by UV radiation while still on the boat, the thread releases light even after the exposure has ended, and it has been dropped into the water.

Currently, these polymer fibers are 2 to 3 millimeters in diameter, yet it's possible to optimize technology to create even thinner versions.

Worldwide impact

This technology applied to deep-sea fishing results in a strong global impact, as it doesn't need batteries or any power source in the filament itself, thus generating its own luminescence.
Luminescence is a technique widely used to attract fish, but in this case with far fewer environmental consequences than the traditional fishing technique, as it is a cleaner solution and is capable of significantly reducing levels of marine pollution. Until now, the lighting systems associated with industrial fishing lines required disposable chemical lights or systems using LEDs and halogen lamps, which depended on coupled power supplies.
FishFiberLight, on the other hand, has its own glow, which means it no longer needs conventional light bulbs, which are often left in the sea after they break down. As the string itself is luminous, there is no room for waste and everything is collected back on the boat.
